I am backing Coventry City

The only period Coventry City spent in the top flight of English football was an impressive one.

Between 1967 and 2001 the Sky Blues held their own against the game’s elite.

They were inaugural members of the Premier League in 1992 and had won their first major trophy five years earlier when Brian Kilcline lifted the FA Cup at Wembley.

The great Jimmy Hill was Chairman of the PFA and oversaw the abolition of the maximum wage back in his playing days.

After retiring at Fulham, Hill became manager of Coventry City and miraculously transformed the club’s fortunes.

He was a pioneer and changed the colour of the club’s home strip, whilst also penning the popular ‘The Sky Blue Song’ of the day.

Jimmy Hill was the first person to see the advantages of getting the fans in early by providing pre-match entertainment, and before long Highfield Road was soon up to scratch sporting two new modern stands.

After two promotions Jimmy Hill stood down as manager after guiding Coventry into the First Division. He became a Director and then Chairman of the club.

Quite rightly there is a statue of Jimmy Hill planted outside Coventry City’s most recent home, the Ricoh Arena.

After the dust had settled after the final round of games in the Championship, I read Dean Wilkins article on The Mag, and agreed with everything he said about a possible (or probably impossible, take your pick) promotion for Sunderland.

They will now take on Coventry City in a two-legged play-off semi-final.

During the 34 years that Coventry City played at the top level, Sunderland were relegated from the top tier on five occasions. The mackems also spent a season in the old Third Division in 1987/88.

Since Coventry City’s last season in the top flight, the mackems have been relegated from it a further three times, and have once more suffered the ignominy of being demoted to the third tier.

These two forthcoming encounters only guarantees a shoot out in the play-off at Wembley, who do you actually think deserves another stab at the Premier League between these two sides?
