When Domenico Tedesco’s starting XI for the Nations League clash with Italy was announced, many were surprised to see that Manchester City star Jeremy Doku was down to play as a wing-back. The natural winger has never really been used in such a way before. Following the 2-2 draw, as reported by Het Nieuwsblad, Doku responded to questions about where he started the match.
‘I knew I was going to play there. But people know of course that it’s not my usual position‘ Doku told the media. When asked about the fact that both Italian goals came from his side, Doku said ‘What can I do about that? I am better at attacking than defending. And I can hardly be efficient on both sides‘.
In the second half Doku was pushed further forward into his natural position. Having been 2-0 down within 25 minutes, the Red Devils were able to fight back to secure a 2-2 draw. A first international goal from Maxim De Cuyper before half-time and another for Leandro Trossard after the hour mark secured a point. Belgium sit third in their Nations League group and face France next.
