The Newcastle United defender has spoken to the media ahead of England’s friendly against Andorra this Saturday.

Dan Burn has confirmed his personal feelings on his former teammate, Alexander Isak’s, actions when he forced a move to Anfield and refused to play for Newcastle United.

“I am glad it is done. We wanted the transfer window closed to have a bit of clarity on it. I have been in football long enough to understand that for a player, careers are short, and they have things they want to achieve.

“Alex is a mate and it is a tough situation because you want him to be around and helping the team, but also understand for him what he needs to do personally. I have nothing but good wishes for Alex.

“No animosity. As a Newcastle fan, we are very protective of our club and city, and we want players to be there who want to play for Newcastle, and you don’t want them to naively think that there is anyone else to go apart from Newcastle. So I understand why our fans are frustrated.

“I wish Alex all the best apart from when we play Liverpool, obviously!” Chuckled Burn.

It is fair to say that Burn has been pivotal to Newcastle United’s success in recent years, a cult hero, one of their own and has popped up with some incredibly important goals for the club – but the defender feels he is playing his best football at this current moment, at 33-years-old.

“I have been playing well for a long time now, and that has built a lot of confidence – and being successful last season by winning the League Cup and qualifying for the Champions League – so I feel in a really good place. I also feel the older I am getting, I am still getting better.

“It’s an exciting season, I am 33 and getting a chance to play Champions League again, and the possibility of making the World Cup squad motivates me to keep pushing myself.”

He also expanded on the lessons England have learnt from the last time they faced Andorra, and has highlighted the importance of mentality, no matter the opponent.

“I try to go in with the mentality that I am leaving absolutely everything out there and not have any regrets. I am just trying to do everything that the manager has asked me.

“There was a lot of learning from the last time we played Andorra, maybe tactical things we didn’t get right and even from the mentality view – a lot of the lads are used to playing in these games where you are on the ball constantly and expected to dominate, and I am not really used to that.

“I feel like in the top teams, the mentality doesn’t change.”
