Plymouth Argyle have been told to tie down Andre Gray to a longer-term deal than the one he is currently on, following his recent spike in form.

A last minute goal has not been a rare occurrence at Home Park this season, with the latest of them coming last Friday.

Andre Gray bagged twice against his former team, Watford, in the 2-2 stalemate between the two Championship sides, taking his tally for the club to three goals in five appearances.

Plymouth offered Gray the chance to return to England after a couple of seasons in Greece and Saudi Arabia. He was signed as a free agent and was given a deal that schedules him to be with Wayne Rooney's side until the new year.

However, because of his recent form, Argyle fans, including Football League World's Plymouth fan pundit Chris, have been clambering for the 33-year-old to sign an extended deal with the Pilgrims before he becomes a free agent again.

Plymouth urged to extend Andre Gray deal

Handing Gray fresh terms would create good competition up front at Plymouth, according to the Pilgrims fan pundit.

Gray's celebration after his second goal of the evening certainly suggested that he wanted to stay with Argyle, who are also reported to be interested in Liverpool forward Jayden Danns - a January move which would further strengthen their attacking options.

"Andre Gray has continued to impress Argyle fans over recent games," said Chris. "In his last match, he scored two fantastic goals which were crafted by the ex-Premier League striker.

"Considering his contract expires at the beginning of January there is no doubt that many Argyle fans will be keen to see him extend his contract until at least the end of the season.

"From this, Wayne Rooney has also said that discussions will be had with the striker to hopefully continue this arrangement and keep him until the end of the season, as well as Gray himself saying that he'd be keen to have these discussions as well.

"He's also highlighted in local media that he feels very lucky that he has got another opportunity to play in English football at this level, as he was shunned by several clubs in regards to his previous association with the Saudi leagues.

"From this I believe that he is building up a positive relationship with Wayne Rooney and the club, although he has stipulated that Plymouth is very far away from his home, which may have a negative impact (on Argyle's chances of keeping him) should another club be keen to look at him.

"If he decides to sign a contract extension, as well as the possibility of signing other players in the forward roles, such as the rumoured Jayden Danns, there will be healthy competition for the number nine role, along with Ryan Hardie and Michael Obafemi.

Plymouth should offer Andre Gray a deal until the end of the season, but nothing more than that

Let's face reality: Plymouth are likely to be one of the teams that are battling to stay away from the bottom three spots in the Championship table. They have done a decent job so far, but they can't continue to rely on late moments of magic to save them in games.

That said, they should continue to ride the crest of this wave. Gray is in good form; when a striker gets like this, any team has a decent enough chance of surviving the drop.

As a short-term solution, it only seems logical to keep him around. Whether he could be an effective piece for seasons to come is a different question, and that's where Plymouth need to be careful.

They don't want to tie themselves down to a deal which is going to come back to bite a year from now. An offer that would keep Gray until the end of the season should suit all parties.
