Nyirenda confident he can topple Sundowns

Former Baroka FC head coach Wedson Nyirenda says he is open to a return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) and has set his sights on knocking the dominant Mamelodi Sundowns off their perch.

The Zambian tactician is no stranger to the South African football landscape, having turned for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs as a player before switching to the tactical board.

Notably, Nyirenda guided Baroka to a historic Telkom Knockout (now Carling Knockout Cup) title at the expense of Orlando Pirates in 2018. It was the Limpopo club’s first major silverware.

Speaking to Foot Africa in an exclusive interview, the ex-Zambia national team coach expressed concrete interest on returning to the PSL dugout, stating that he has unfinished business in the South African topflight.

“It’s my wish to return to the PSL anytime soon and believe me I am looking forward to getting back to the PSL once more. I didn’t finish my mission there; I was in that league for only five months, and I delivered the Telkom Knockout trophy to Baroka FC,” Nyirenda told Foot Africa.

Nyirenda went on to reveal that his mission is to topple Sundowns, who have won a record-extending eight consecutive championships, and exudes confidence he’s the right man to end Downs’ dominance.

“I want to come back, and my mission will be accomplished when I win the PSL league, that’s what I’m looking for. There is a need for somebody to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns and give them a real challenge,” he added.

“I think I can do that if given an opportunity, I can do that job with all my heart.

Currently unattached, Nyirenda is on course to complete his CAF Pro Diploma License and is actively searching for a new project at the highest level.
