One Liverpool star has surprised Thierry Henry with just how good he is. The France legend did not see this coming.
Liverpool spent an incredible amount of money over the summer in order to refresh - and hopefully improve on - a title-winning squad. Over £400m went out, with £200m in player sales subsidising things.
The bulk of that money went on two players. Liverpool first broke their transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, offering up £100m that could rise further.
It made Wirtz the first nine-figure signing in Liverpool’s history. Yet, he wasn’t actually the record signing by the end of the window.
A drawn-out pursuit of Alexander Isak resulted in the Swede signing for the Reds right at the last moment. They paid Newcastle United around £130m for the player, making him not only Liverpool’s most-expensive player ever but the biggest British transfer in history.
And yet, despite all of that money and all of that hype, it’s a different summer signing that’s really catching the eye.
Thierry Henry, speaking for a column with Betway, has hailed Hugo Ekitike as his signing of the summer. That's for the entire Premier League, too.
But the Arsenal legend admits he didn't see that coming. His compatriot was always a talent but this good?
"At the beginning, he had to prove that he could be at Liverpool, and he did," said Henry. "Now the club is struggling and he’s still delivering. He surprised me. I knew he had that in his locker, but I didn’t know it was going to be that quick in terms of how he adapted.
"Of course, it’s easier to adapt when a team is rolling. But he adapted, then he went on the bench, didn’t say anything, came back and still scores his goals, so you have to put him up there."
