‘I didn’t want to go to the Championship or to a small town in Wales’ – Lyon’s Pavel Sulc reveals declined Wrexham move | OneFootball

It is no secret that Pavel Sulc (25) was close to a move away from Olympique Lyonnais this summer; he has already said as much while speaking to the media while away on international duty with Czechia.

Sulc, however, has now revealed that he specifically turned down interest from one club, despite a significant summer offer being made to Lyon for his services. An offer of just over €40m came in from EFL Championship side Wrexham, as per Sulc. The Welsh club once again have designs on earning promotion to the Premier League this season. Once again, the club’s owners are prepared to commit considerable funds to meet that objective.

But attracting talent is, naturally, still an issue. That was at least the case for Sulc, who has just played at the FIFA World Cup with Czechia, and who is now an important player at a club fighting at the top of Ligue 1 and in the UEFA Europa League. He told Seznam Zpravy the brutally honest reason why he turned down a move to Wrexham.

“To be honest, Wrexham looks like a Hollywood fairytale, but I didn’t want to go to the Championship or to a small town in Wales. I hope that won’t be seen as a mark of disrespect,” said OL playmaker Sulc, who is now back from injury and involved once again under Paulo Fonseca at the Groupama Stadium.
