Joao Palhinha’s future seems to be moving further and further away from FC Bayern, with the Portuguese himself now making it clear that he would like to stay at Tottenham Hotspur on a permanent basis

After a turbulent season in the Premier League, Tottenham only managed to secure relegation on the final matchday, with Joao Palhinha, of all people, becoming the match-winner: the midfielder scored the decisive goal in the 1-0 win against Everton to keep Spurs in the league

For the 30-year-old, this match could also symbolize his future

Palhinha feels at home at Tottenham

The Portuguese international moved to London from FC Bayern on loan last summer, with a purchase option of €30 million agreed in his contract

Whether Tottenham will actually pay this sum remains to be seen, however. According to the English media, Spurs would still like to lower the price

However, Palhinha himself has now made it clear that he would like to stay. „Since my first day here, I’ve felt at home,“ the midfielder told reporters, including The Athletic, after the Everton game

The Bayern loanee was particularly clear in his comments about the club: „The fans, the crowd – a top club. Who wouldn’t want to play for Tottenham and stay here? I have everything here,“ said Palhinha

The Portuguese then even drew an unusual comparison: „It’s like a marriage.“ He continued: „What I can tell you is that I would really like to stay here.“

Bayern plans without Palhinha

The statements are in line with current developments at FC Bayern. Palhinha no longer plays a key role in the long-term plans at Säbener Straße. The Munich club would like to get the midfielder off the payroll permanently in the summer

Sporting Lisbon have also been repeatedly linked with the defensive midfielder recently, while statements from Tottenham coach Roberto De Zerbi have already indicated that Spurs can envisage a permanent transfer

The decisive factor will now be whether Tottenham exercise their option to buy or enter into new negotiations with Bayern over the transfer fee

However, one thing seems clear: Palhinha himself currently sees his future in London rather than Munich.
