Christian Norgaard has completed his move to Everton from Arsenal, and the Danish midfielder has now explained why he decided to leave the Emirates after only one season with the club.
Norgaard helped Arsenal win the league title last season while also being part of the squad that reached the final of the Champions League. Although he believed he could succeed at the Emirates, he did not receive enough opportunities to feature regularly for the team.
Arsenal viewed Norgaard as a backup option, and when opportunities did arrive, they were sometimes in defence rather than in his preferred midfield position. The lack of consistent playing time influenced his decision to look for a new challenge.
The midfielder is now focused on securing more minutes and playing a more important role at his next club. Everton believe he can contribute significantly to their progress, and Arsenal agreed to allow him to complete the transfer.
Norgaard will now compete for a midtable club, which represents a significant change after being part of an Arsenal squad competing for major honours. However, he believes regular football and a bigger responsibility are more important for the next stage of his career.
After completing the transfer, he explained his decision via ESPN:
“I felt I needed a change and to play a bigger football role.
“When I spoke to David Moyes and others at the club involved in the transfer, I heard about the whole project and I was very intrigued. Coming here just makes that feeling even stronger.”
His comments show that the midfielder was attracted by the opportunity to become a more important figure within a team’s plans. Rather than remaining as a limited option at Arsenal, he has chosen a move where he expects to have a greater influence.
Everton will hope that Norgaard’s experience from competing at the highest level can help them achieve their objectives, while Arsenal will continue preparing for the new season with their squad changes already underway.
