Derby County owner David Clowes still in search of external investment but Derby fans have full faith in him
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Lifelong Derby County supporter and current owner, David Clowes, is still in search for external investment to come in alongside him at Pride Park.
After bringing in 13 players in the summer transfer window just passed, with John Eustace being given the backing of £13.5m investment, Derby County owner David Clowes has been a popular figure among the Rams faithful since taking over the club back in July 2022.
His unwavering commitment to the East Midlands outfit has shone through since his arrival due to his close connection with the fans by being one himself. After saving his club from liquidation and paying off debts of over £55m, Clowes has certainly got Derby County back on track and looks to push on through the arrival of new signings after narrowly escaping the drop from the Championship last season.
With Clowes still in search of an external investor to work alongside him in the ownership of the Rams, for the time being, his sole ownership seems to be the direction the club is heading in. However, Derby seem to be in safe hands with him at the helm and Eustace driving the team on in the dugout.
After taking over in 2022, Clowes became an instant hit with the Derby fans and looks to be heading into a new era of success guided by his investment in fresh personnel on the pitch, as well as having the financial worries of three years ago under control.
Football League World's Derby County fan pundit, Shaun Woodward, gave his thoughts on the future of Derby County under Clowes and the question of: Is external investment needed sooner rather than later?
Shaun said: "I have complete faith in David Clowes running the club."
"I don't think any Derby fan can argue about what he's done for the club. Initially, saving us and clearing a lot of our debt, and then investing heavily under John Eustace, fully supporting him in the transfer window."
"Only David Clowes can say how long he can continue to put the money in he has, and it's clear that he does need external investment to come in. But in the short-term, I would be more than happy to see David Clowes running the club and having full control until he can bring someone else in alongside him or to step aside to let someone takeover."
After being in financial turmoil three years ago, fast-forward to now and there are clear signs of the ongoing rebuild at Derby, as highlighted by the summer incomings such as Patrick Agyemang, who signed from the Rams from Charlotte for £5.8m. Heightened spending is sure to be an avenue to success or at least keep the supporters on board.
Shaun said: "All Derby fans are massively grateful for what he's done. He's club that club going through extremely difficult circumstances, and we're indebted to him."
"So we can't moan about what he has done and if he stays in some capacity, then we will always be happy and grateful to have him at the club, but at some point I do think we are going to need external investment, so it's just when that'll happen."
