Noussair Mazraoui has come to the defence of his Manchester United teammate Matthijs de Ligt urging fans to recognize the Dutch centre back’s resurgence after difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

Speaking in interview this week, the Moroccan international dismissed the notion that De Ligt’s transfer had been failure insisting that the 25 year old has evolved into one of the club’s most consistent and vocal leaders on the pitch.

"Matthijs is one of the most improved players this season" said Mazraoui. "He’s aggressive in duels, hates losing any challenge and you can clearly see the Ajax school in the way he plays. With the ball, he’s composed and intelligent: without it, he reads the game superbly. He’s a real leader — you always hear his voice on the pitch which is so important for defender"

Mazraoui added: "Off the pitch, he’s calm, humble and always smiling. He jokes around, keeps the group positive — honestly, I like this guy a lot. I’m proud of what he’s doing right now. He’s still young and hasn’t reached his full potential. I truly believe he can become one of the best defenders in the world again"

Since joining United, De Ligt has built solid numbers:

  • 990 minute played in the Premier League
  • 1 goal
  • 87.4% pass accuracy
  • 66% success in both ground and aerial duels
  • 13 successful tackles

Calm amid pressure

The Dutch defender had faced harsh criticism earlier in the campaign from sections of the fanbase who labeled his transfer from Bayern Munich as underwhelming.

But recent weeks have seen a shift in tone, with pundits now praising his maturity & discipline — qualities Mazraoui believes will make him cornerstone of United’s defensive future.
