INEOS need to be ruthless when it comes to offloading substandard players this summer.

Their job will be made somewhat easier by senior players Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans leaving as free agents, although recuperating fees for the Nordic pair wouldn’t have gone amiss.

Lindelof is the youngest of the departing quartet; he will be 31 years old by the time 2025/2026 gets underway, meaning he still has a few more years to continue plying his trade at the top level.

Following a stop-start season at Manchester United through injuries, he’s just enjoyed his first 90 minutes of international action for exactly 12 months, captaining his country throughout their 5-1 victory over Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

Post-match, he highlighted the importance of regular game time – something he hasn’t been able to enjoy at Old Trafford for some time now.

Lindelof makes increased game time plea that United can’t fulfil

“It’s been a while. It felt good. It’s nice to play 90 minutes. I need minutes,” Lindelof admitted. “We play with very high intensity in the national team, so it’s fun to hold for 90 minutes.

“It’s a tough and demanding way to play football. But we have to do that, too. It still felt like we solved it well, but it’s a little different sometimes to be so high up.”

Of course, with the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, and now, potentially, even Ayden Heaven all ranking above him in Ruben Amorim’s pecking order, his plea for increased game time will unfortunately fall on deaf ears in Manchester.

That’s not to say it can’t be obtained elsewhere, though. Lindelof has been strongly linked with a return to former club Benfica when his terms expire – eight years on from his £31 million transfer to United. The move would allow him to continue playing in one of the top leagues whilst also having some form of European football to look forward to each campaign.
