Arne Slot believes a summer of change at Liverpool has played its part in the champions’ poor run of form this season.

A 3-2 defeat at Brentford was Liverpool’s fourth successive Premier League defeat, leaving the Reds down in sixth and four points behind leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool continued to show defensive vulnerability and while creating chances and scoring goals remain a non-issue, Slot admits their downturn in form is wholly unacceptable.

“Teams have a certain playing style against us which is a very good strategy,” the Liverpool boss explained after their latest setback at the Brentford Community Stadium.

“We haven’t found the answers yet and every time going 1-0 down doesn’t really help as well after five minutes. It’s a bit of that – teams knowing what strategy to play against us.

Liverpool have shipped 14 from their opening nine league matches. It took the Reds 16 games to concede the same number last season and Slot knows the issue needs addressing and quickly.

“Even today, when we didn’t play well, we are still able to score two goals and create more chances than the two goals we scored from open play, but you cannot even compete up there because we are simply conceding too many goals.”

Slot also made reference to Liverpool’s summer spending and admits it can take extra time for things to gel.

“It definitely also has to do with if you change quite a lot during the summer, then it’s not a surprise that it can go a little bit like this,” he added.

“But I didn’t expect it to go with four losses in a row, let that be clear. It’s always a bit of a bumpy road if you change – that is not so surprising, but four losses in a row.

“And I don’t know if this will be seen as an excuse but from the last six games we played, It’s been five away? Sometimes this is also not really helpful if you’re in the run of form that we are.”
