Anthony Gordon has joined up with the England squad on the back of two massive victories for Newcastle United.
United hammering Union S-G 4-0 in the Champions League with two Anthony Gordon spot-kicks amongst the goals.
Then Eddie Howe’s side with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, the visitors lucky to get away with just that two goal margin.
Joining up now with the England squad, they have two games in October.
A friendly at home to Wales on Thursday 9 October.
Then a World Cup group qualifier away to Latvia on Tuesday 14 October.
Victory in that away game would make England mathematically certain to top the group and qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup finals, despite still two more group games to play.
All the talk will then turn to who will make that England squad for the tournament finals next summer, with the NUFC star desperate to be part of it.
Anthony Gordon was part of the England team that started the last match and took Serbia apart, winning 5-0 in Belgrade and all but confirming their place at the 2026 World Cup finals:
“One performance is not enough.
“I think I have probably been at fifty per cent in an England shirt [overall], nowhere near where I can get to.
“But I’m feeling more comfortable every time I play, I’m looking forward to performing like that more often.
“That said, I probably should have been putting in those performances a little bit earlier. But I felt I played really well against Serbia and I’m looking forward to kicking on from there.”
“At this level, you see the [England] squad changing all the time, players coming in, players leaving.
“I think you have almost got to be a bit paranoid that you’re not going to get in [the England squad] because it pushes you even further.
“You have always got to challenge yourself, because the lads you’re competing with are always at the highest level, because that’s the level we’re playing at.
“I never think I’m nailed on to be in the England squad] but obviously it is a massive goal for me and one I’m pushing for.
“It’s up to us as players to push ourselves as individuals and that ultimately challenges the next man in our position to do better again.
“It is a World Cup year and everyone seems to be flying.
“We have to focus on the team.
“It is the team that is going to win tournaments, hopefully, so I think it is never going to be about individuals. The moment we start making it about individuals is when we have got a problem.”
Anthony Gordon on advice he has been getting from Harry Kane since the Newcastle United star became part of the England squad:
“I think he has been naturally doing that for definitely the past two years, since I have been playing with him.
“He [Harry Kane] has been on fire this year, he is someone where I try and pick his brains.
“I probably do his head in most of the time to be honest, but I try and just pick anything I can from him, because he is a genius.
