The last night was a particularly hard one for the FC Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski, as his Polish national team lost its World Cup play-off match against Sweden and thus missed out on the chance to play in the next edition of the biggest event in international football.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the striker spoke to the media after this heartbreaking game. He was unclear on whether this could have been his last World Cup with the Polish team, as he replied to the question: “I still don’t know.”
Lewandowski had also shared a post with the song “It’s time to say goodbye”, and when asked whether it was an indication that his time with the national team was coming to an end, he replied:
“What will I do? I don’t know. I need to think it through carefully, reflect. I can’t make any statement right now. I’ll return to the club… I still have some matches left to play. This post is not a statement.”
Commenting on the match itself, the Pole said:
“It’s hard to say anything after a game like that. I don’t know if the words I find would reflect what we feel. Football can be very cruel. You can play well, come from behind twice, and still end up empty-handed. For a fan, that’s the worst feeling. It hurts because we were very close. That third goal was the worst part. If there had been extra time, our chances would have increased with every minute. We believed we could beat them, either in the second half or in extra time.”
This surely must have been a heart-wrenching night for Robert Lewandowski, as this would certainly have been his last World Cup. Hopefully, this defeat will drive him to play with an even more increased spirit for Barcelona to end the season on a high note.
