At the age of 40, Dante is understandably taking it a year at a time. Despite talk of a retirement towards the end of last season, he continued and the signs are that he may do so again next season.
No OGC Nice outfield player has played as many minutes than captain Dante this season. The Brazilian remains displacable at the heart of Les Aiglons’ defence, and despite a recent downturn in form, in line with a collective drop-off, he remains one of the key performers in Francesco Farioli’s side.
Speaking at the start of the season, Dante said he wasn’t going into this season as though it is his last and so it may prove. Speaking to L’Équipe, Le Gym’s sporting director Florent Ghisolfi revealed that there is an open dialogue with Dante, who he believes wants to continue his playing career.
“Dante – he is Nice’s identity. He knows that his future is here. We are in dialogue. We’ll see when things advance. He is a competitor, but he doesn’t want to go one season too far. Today, he is feeling good and I think he wants to continue. We are arriving at the period where it will be decided,” said Ghisolfi. Whilst Dante will turn 41 in October, he may yet have one more year in him.
