Former footballer turned pundit Robbie Mustoe believes Wesley Fofana is a potential superstar and can develop into a world class centre back.
Life has been difficult for Fofana since he made the move to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth up to £75m.
The Frenchman has been plagued by injury issues and missed the entire of the last campaign with an ACL injury and only returned to action in pre-season, whilst he revealed he received an approach from Marseille in the summer.
The 23-year-old featured regularly in pre-season as Enzo Maresca looked to build -up his fitness and match sharpness, and he’s started all but one Premier League game as he was suspended against Liverpool.
Alongside Levi Colwll he is part of Maresca’s first choice centre back pairing and the duo are showing signs they could be a very good partnership in future, with Fofana saying fans have only seen 10-20% of his potential.
Other than Cole Palmer and possibly Moises Caicedo it’s hard to argue that right now Chelsea have many world class players on their books.
Fofana is part of Chelsea’s first choice centre back pairing alongside Levi Colwill.
However, Mustoe feels Fofana is a potential superstar and can become a world class centre back in the future, something Chelsea will also be hoping.
“I think he’s a potential superstar,” he told NBC Sports.
“He wasn’t outstanding [against Manchester United], but if you look at the moments where he does get caught one-on-one, he’s very, very quick. We know he’s super confident on the ball.
“We know he’s had a tonne of injury issues, so I’m not blasting it out there. I’m just saying to everybody when you watch him keep an eye on and watch him play.
“He’s a defender and got great pace. I think he’s got the potential to be an outstanding, really world-class centre-back.”

Fofana certainly has the all the attributes and it will be interesting to see how he develops over the course of the season and if he can stay fit.
The defender won’t feature against Noah in the Conference League on Thursday night, but will almost certainly be back in the line-up for Sunday’s game against Arsenal.
