Kylian Mbappé (26) is drawing closer to becoming France’s all-time top scorer. The Real Madrid forward has scored 52 times for his national side, which makes him the second most prolific goal scorer for France, behind only Olivier Giroud (39), who scored 57 before retiring from international duty in 2024.
It’s long been expected that Mbappé will surpass Giroud’s record, with the former Paris Saint-Germain man saying as much to the press during today’s press conference. Mbappé said, “Giroud’s record? I think I’ll beat it, but I don’t know when, maybe tomorrow, who knows?”
Mbappé would have to score six against Azerbaijan in tomorrow’s fixture to beat Giroud and claim the record, and perhaps hope that history repeats itself. The last time these two nations met was in 1995 when France won 10-0. However, in that match, there were eight goal scorers, with only Youri Djorkaeff and Frank Lebouef both netting twice.
France will also travel to Iceland on Monday, the 13th of October. Les Bleus currently sit in 1st place in their FIFA World Cup qualifying group.
