Eyebrows were raised when Anderlecht announced that Besnik Hasi would return to manage the side for the play-offs and the cup final. The head coach had earlier this year been sacked by KV Mechelen after a poor run of form, but somehow managed to find himself in charge of steering Anderlecht into Europe and winning them the cup. It is safe to say that things have not gone to plan for Anderlecht or Hasi since the two joined forces. Anderlecht have picked up just one point from their opening four matches in the play-offs.

In an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, Hasi was asked about frustration amongst the fanbase. The head coach said ‘There are no excuses. We must and can change the atmosphere among the supporters. This team can do much better than what it has shown so far’. The results so far mean that Anderlecht sit in fourth place out of the six man group. Their best chances of European football remain winning the cup final against Club Brugge at the start of May. For now, they face Gent this week in back to back matches. Defeat to the Buffaloes would see them slip into fifth spot and out of the European ticket spaces. Depending on who wins the cup final, the side who finishes fourth will have to play the winners of play-off two for the final European ticket.

For Hasi, the chances of him remaining as head coach for next season are getting slimmer with every passing week. At this rate, even winning the cup may not be enough to secure his future with Anderlecht.
