Marc Guehi has added his voice to the growing chorus of City players urging Pep Guardiola to stay at Manchester City, insisting “everyone would love him to stay” after Saturday’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea at Wembley.

The England international spoke in the immediate aftermath of the victory, with the centre-back collecting an FA Cup winner’s medal in what has been a remarkable first four months at the Etihad Stadium since joining from Crystal Palace for £20 million in January.

The question of Guardiola’s future has loomed over the final weeks of the season, with the 55-year-old deflecting questions on the subject with characteristic wit in his post-match interviews at Wembley on Saturday evening.

Five Things Learned: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester City (FA Cup Final)

I’ve learnt so much since I’ve come to Man City, says Guehi

Speaking to TNT Sports, Guehi was warm and direct on the subject of Guardiola’s future – speaking not just as a City player but as someone who has experienced the manager’s methods first-hand since arriving in January.

“Everyone would love him to stay! He’s a legend, a legend of the football club, legend in football,” the defender said on the Manchester City manager.

“I’ve learnt so much since I’ve come here so I’d love him to stay. But if that’s not the case, then I wish him all the best!”

What does Guardiola’s future mean for City?

The 25-year-old’s acknowledgement of how much he has taken from the experience speaks to the same quality that players with far longer tenures at the club have described in similar terms.

Guehi’s comments arrive on the same evening that Guardiola said in his post-match press conference that “the future is bright” and that he is “pretty sure” City “will be there in the next years” – words that were widely interpreted as the clearest signal yet of his intention to stay.

A decision on his future had previously been expected before the end of May, and with the season now into its final week, clarity is expected imminently.

For Guehi and his teammates, the hope is that the man who has shaped this club for nine years will be in the dugout when the new season begins.
