Ian Poveda has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding at about 100mph in a 70mph zone.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the 26-year-old was stopped on the A184 in South Tyneside at around 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025 while driving a black Range Rover.

He was a Sunderland player at the time. A police officer saw the vehicle accelerate away and judged it to be well over the limit. The officer signalled him to stop and he pulled over immediately.

Poveda did not attend the hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. His lawyer said the speeding lasted only a very short period. He already had nine points on his licence from three previous speeding offences.

Magistrates imposed a further six points, triggering disqualification under the totting up procedure. After admitting the offence, he was fined £800, plus a £320 surcharge and £600 costs.

London-born, the Colombia international previously played for Leeds in the Premier League and made 25 appearances across four seasons. He left Sunderland last month and signed for Internacional de Bogota.
