Ian Poveda has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding at around 100mph in a 70mph zone. The winger previously featured for Leeds United in the Premier League, making 25 appearances across four seasons.

He was stopped on the A184 in South Tyneside at about 8.45am on Sunday 23 February 2025 while a Sunderland player, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.

He did not attend North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor Brian Payne said an officer saw his black Range Rover accelerate away on the dual carriageway and suggested the speed was about 100mph.

The officer signalled for the vehicle to stop and Poveda pulled over immediately. Defence solicitor Janice Hall said the speeding lasted only a very short time.

He already had nine points on his licence from three previous speeding offences, the court heard. Magistrates added six more, triggering a totting-up disqualification.

He admitted the offence and was fined £800, plus a £320 surcharge and £600 in costs.
