Rangers’ summer has already thrown up more twists than most would have anticipated, with plenty of names coming and going in the rumour mill and a growing sense that the rebuild is far from over. There has been a lot of talk, some quiet optimism, and more than a few false dawns as the Ibrox side try to reshape for the season ahead. Targets have come and gone and there have been a few interesting developments that could still shape what comes next for the club. Among the more significant stories has been the one surrounding Conor Coady.

The former England international was heavily linked with a move to Rangers in recent weeks, with multiple outlets including Ibrox Noise reporting the club’s strong interest. Coady was seen as the ideal experienced head at the back, especially following the exits of several defenders in recent times. He boasts hundreds of Premier League appearances and is well known to incoming manager Russell Martin, making the move seem logical and even likely at one stage.

However, things have taken a serious turn with Sky Sports now confirming that Wolves have entered the fray and are ready to offer the veteran stopper a staggering £70,000 a week to return to Molineux. That figure is not even close to anything Rangers can offer and realistically rules the Scottish giants out of the running. It is believed Rangers were prepared to go as high as £30,000 to land Coady, but that figure pales in comparison to what Wolves have on the table.

Ibrox Noise also suggested that some Rangers fans were unsure about his pace and suitability for Scottish football. Despite that, his leadership qualities and experience would have made him a solid addition to the Ibrox dressing room, especially with so much change happening this summer. Losing him to a club like Wolves, though, is understandable given the financial gulf and the lure of remaining in England.

As Ibrox Noise have outlined, the club will now have to turn to other defensive options with time still on their side. This one feels like a case of what might have been. Rangers did the right thing in trying to land a player of Coady’s calibre, but the timing and market realities have got in the way.
