"ICE will not be at the stadium. It is not a mass enforcement operation. That is not the goal," said Rodney Barreto, co-chair of the 2026 World Cup organising committee.
"This will be a great experience for everyone. We are fortunate to have a president passionate about sport (Donal Trump) who has allocated the resources needed to reimburse cities for their police protection." He was speaking to The Athletic.
Visiting Miami, one of the host cities, he addressed local concerns around potential disorder, alongside criticism of the immigration and customs agency in recent months.
"He will ensure passports are processed quickly and that people can arrive without a hitch. The process will be organised to avoid any delay."
Miami previously saw trouble at the 2024 Copa America final, when fans stormed gates at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, causing injuries and delaying the start of Argentina’s 1-0 win over Colombia on 15 July 2024.
