Iceland Women started their Euro 2022 campaign with a point after missing a penalty and then conceding one to Belgium in Manchester.
Scorers: Vanhaevermaet pen 67′; Thorvaldsdóttir 50′
The only major incident of a low key first half was when Iceland were were awarded that spot kick following a handball but Berglind Thorvaldsdóttir’s weak effort was easily saved shortly after the half hour mark.
Moments after the restart, Nicky Evrard was forced into a tougher save, sticking out a strong leg to deny Sveindís Jónsdóttir’s drive across goal following a fantastic mazy run.
But on 50 minutes, she was beaten at last when a deep cross to the far post was headed in by Thorvaldsdóttir, making up for her earlier penalty miss.
And the penalty action wasn’t finished there when, 15 minutes later, Belgium were awarded one of their own after Elena Dhont was bundled over just inside the area, allowing Justine Vanhaevermaet to calmly send the goalkeeper the wrong way to level.
Both goalkeepers were forced to make good saves in the closing stages as the sides were forced to settle for a point apiece.
