He has scored 61 goals this season, won three collective trophies, finished as the Bundesliga’s top scorer (36 goals in 31 matches) and claimed the European Golden Boot for the second time in three years.
As he approaches his 33rd birthday, Harry Kane (32) may well have just enjoyed the greatest campaign of his career. That naturally leads him to think about the Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded on 26th October, on home soil in London.
But to give himself the best possible chance, the Bayern Munich striker knows he will have to put in a stellar World Cup performance. In fact, he will almost definitely have to win it. In that case, the path would surely be open to him.
“I’d be one of the favorites, definitely.,” the Three Lions captain said in an interview with L’Équipe. “Given the trophies I’ve won this season and the number of goals I’ve scored, I’d be in the running. Especially as, should England win the World Cup, one could imagine the trophy going to an English player.”
Realistic, Kane is also well aware that the competition will be fierce. “When you look at who the current favourites are to win the Ballon d’Or, there’s Michael (Olise), the Champions League finalists and me,” he estimates.
Ousmane Dembélé (29), in particular, certainly has no intention of giving up his title without a fight.
