Paul Merson has admitted he’d be “shocked” if Chelsea were able to take anything from their game against Newcastle.

The Blues travel to St James’ Park on Sunday in a critical game in the race for the Champions League football, with both team locked on 63 points.

The Magpies sit fourth and ahead of the Blues on goal difference, whilst both teams are just a point behind Manchester City in third.

Merson makes Newcastle vs Chelsea prediction

It’s been a difficult second half of the campaign for Enzo Maresca’s side, but they have seemingly found form at just right the time.

Chelsea head into the game off the back of three consecutive Premier League wins and made the Conference League final on Thursday night.

Sunday’s game is a huge opportunity to take a massive step towards the Champions League, but Merson has revealed he can’t see the Blues getting anything.

“If I’m not mistaken, Chelsea haven’t won at this ground for three or four years now! I’d be shocked if Chelsea got anything from this game,” he told Sportskeeda.

“Prediction: Newcastle United 2-1 Chelsea.”

The Blues could afford to lose one of their final three games, with two wins likely enough, but Maresca insisted Chelsea will be looking to win all of their remaining fixtures.

Maresca praises Tonali

Newcastle have plenty of threats all over the pitch, especially Alexander Isak, who’s arguably been the best striker in the league this season.

However Maresca was full of praise for Sandro Tonali ahead of the game, and the midfielder has been in brilliant form this season.

The Blues don’t have the best record at St James’ Park, and they’ve got to try and do something they haven’t managed for a number of seasons, win a big game away from home.

Whilst it would be brilliant if the Blues could secure all three points the most important thing is Maresca’s men avoid defeat, which is easier said than done.
