Neal Maupay’s (30) inclusion in Olympique de Marseille’s line-up to face Paris Saint-Germain was certainly a surprise. It is only the club’s severe austerity measures that gave the Frenchman a route back into the set-up at the Vélodrome. He has been a part of the squad since the start of the campaign, having spent last season out on loan, and on Sunday night, he made a surprise start in place of Angel Gomes.

It perhaps isn’t entirely surprising that the former Brentford and Everton man was a little rusty. He missed two very presentable chances as Marseille slid to a 2-1 defeat to their fierce rivals and consequently slid into the relegation zone. “I would like to have scored, I should have scored,” reflected Maupay in a post-match mixed zone interview attended by Get French Football News.

“It is difficult for me because, when you’re an attacker and you find yourself in these positions, you have to put those chances away. Unfortunately, tonight I didn’t score and that’s how it is […] I’d like to be like the Harry Kanes, the Erling Haalands and score 50 goals a season but that’s not how it is. It is difficult for us and for me tonight, but we’ll have to dust ourselves off,” said Maupay.
