Spanish journalist laments Barcelona’s decision to sell the centre back amid defensive concerns
"I’d Pay €20 Million to Bring Him Back" – Spanish journalist calls for Barcelona's former defender Return as Barca Defence Struggles
Renowned Spanish journalist Jordi Martí has publicly urged FC Barcelona to re sign their former defender Inigo Martinez, now starring for Saudi giants Al Nassr after Xavi’s side narrowly edged past Girona in La Liga.
Marti’s comments came in the aftermath of Barca’s dramatic 2-1 victory at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium on Saturday night.
Substitute Ronald Araujo headed home 93rd minute winner to seal the points and keep the reigning champions top of the table on 22 point from nine matches, 1 point ahead of rivals Real Madrid.
Frustrated by the Blaugrana’s defensive fragility against Girona’s relentless attack, Marti didn't mince words when assessing the club’s summer transfer decisions.
"I would pay €20 million to bring Inigo Martinez back, He gave the backline solidity and leadership , qualities this team is missing right now" Marti declared after the final whistle.
Barcelona sold the 33 year old centre back to Al Nassr earlier this summer in bid to ease financial pressure. Since then Martinez has become defensive pillar for the Riyadh based club helping Cristiano Ronaldo’s side climb to the top of the Saudi Pro League standings.
Barcelona’s defence, once their strongest department has shown signs of vulnerability this season particularly against high pressing sides.
The team has now conceded goals in 6 of their last 8 match across all competitions , a worrying trend as they chase back to back La Liga titles.
Marti’s remarks reflect growing sentiment among supporters that letting Martínez leave was mistake. His aerial dominance, positional awareness and calmness under pressure were crucial elements in Barca’s back line last season especially in big matches.
Since joining Al Nassr, Martinez's quickly become 1 of the Saudi Pro League’s standout defenders contributing to the league’s best defensive record so far this campaign.
His performances have also reignited talk of potential Spain national team recall ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
