If a Real Madrid winger is available this summer should Manchester City move for him?

One player who has tormented Manchester City in recent seasons is Real Madrid winger Rodrygo. The Brazilian international has scored 4 goals and added 2 assists in 9 appearances against City. His late brace in the 21/22 Champions League semi-final second leg at the Bernabeu turned that semi-final tie. It helped Real Madrid snatch a 6-5 aggregate victory over Pep Guardiola’s side that season. Now a new report indicates that Real Madrid could sell Rodrygo this summer. If the current European champions were to sell the Brazilian winger this summer should City make a move to sign him? That’s not a clear-cut decision despite Rodrygo’s quality as a player.

Real Madrid could sell Rodrygo this summer.

Spanish journalist Jose Pedrerol has told El Chiringuito TV that Real Madrid are willing to sell Rodrygo this summer. Furthermore, Pederol reports that Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe are considered untouchable in the Real Madrid squad. Pederol goes on to report that Rodrygo has previously raised the possibility of leaving Madrid. It is also included in Pederol’s report that Rodrygo’s performances this season haven’t been at the level expected. Due to these factors, Real Madrid could sell the Brazilian international this summer, Pederol adds.

Is there room in Pep Guardiola’s squad for Rodrygo?

On his day, Rodrygo can be unplayable. He has the ability to score crucial goals and set up chances for his teammates. His dribbling ability, versatility and speed are also strong assets to his play. His favoured position is on the left wing. He isn’t often deployed there for Real Madrid due to the presence of Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe in the Madrid squad. In theory, at least, he could slot into the Manchester City squad in that particular role. But is there a role for him in Pep Guardiola’s squad?

Manchester City signed Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt in January. During City’s recent eight-game unbeaten run, we have often seen Marmoush play on the left and drift centrally. Haaland’s absence has seen Pep Guardiola implement this move. But Marmoush isn’t City’s only option on the left.

Jack Grealish, Jeremy Doku and Savinho can all play on the left wing. Doku has been a key player off the bench lately for Pep Guardiola’s side. The future of Jack Grealish remains uncertain at this time. Some of Savinho’s best performances this season have come when he has played on the left. So it does seem that the Manchester City squad is loaded with options where Rodrygo plays his best football or considers his preferred position.

Manchester City moving for Rodrygo isn’t a clear-cut move. There may not be room for him in Pep Guardiola’s squad. The Brazilian winger is a quality player and his versatility to play in multiple positions is appealing. But would he leave Real to play the same role at City? That may be the question. Perhaps if a winger leaves Manchester City, that may change, but for now, a summer move from City for Rodrygo doesn’t appear to be City’s most pressing need this summer.
