FLW's Hatters fan pundit wants to see a major overhaul of their squad ahead of next season
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
FLW's Luton Town fan pundit has predicted a huge overhaul of Matt Bloomfield's squad in the summer, while he believes that there needs to be a huge inquiry into what has caused the club's downfall in both the Premier League and the Championship after the season has ended.
The Hatters were battling hard to stay up in the Premier League this time last year, but 12 months on, they are on track to suffer a successive relegation to League One, with recently-appointed manager Matt Bloomfield mostly unable to stem the tide of their consistently poor performances.
Luton were widely tipped to be the best of the top-flight relegated teams in the Championship, but they currently sit second-bottom of the second-tier with just eight games of the season left. Recent wins over Cardiff City and Portsmouth have given supporters hope of survival, but many questions will still need to be asked of their owners and directors regardless of whether they stay up this season.
Luton are currently staring down the barrel of a shock return to League One after six mostly successful years away. They were able to keep hold of most of the players that performed well in the Premier League for their return to the Championship this season, but most of them have failed to live up to the high expectations that were set during their time in the top-flight.
Individual players cannot be blamed for their downfall, but certain key men were expected to perform better, and have been criticised by supporters for their lack of effort in the midst of a relegation battle.
There are numerous players that will not want to drop down to the third-tier next term, regardless of if they have played well or not in 2024/25. The majority of Hatters fans will no doubt be happy to see most players leave after such a poor campaign, even if they have preserved their Championship status come early May.
FLW's Luton fan pundit, Simon Holden, has forecasted a huge overhaul of Matt Bloomfield's squad in the upcoming transfer window, with many players free to leave, while he has also predicted there to be a public investigation into what has gone wrong behind the scenes to cause such a dire situation.
"My first prediction will be a mass clear out. There will be many players going out of the door," Simon told FLW.
"A complete rebuild will happen at Luton Town Football Club. It’s definitely needed. If players don’t want to be here then they are more than free to go somewhere else.
"I think we will have quite a major investigation into how things have gone over the last 18 months.
"I think it’s necessary. It needs to be public, and is something that the club should get on with as soon as the season does end."
Luton's recent form has been somewhat of an improvement on their previous showings, with two wins, one draw and one loss in their last four Championship games. They have not moved any closer to survival, however, with other relegation-threatened sides also picking up vital points.
On the whole, Matt Bloomfield has not had the desired impact since he was hired as Hatters boss in mid-January, after his decision to jump ship from League One promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers to relegation-threatened Luton certainly raised eyebrows throughout the EFL.
No one could begrudge him the move, given the likely pay rise and potential to be a Town hero if he keeps them up this season, but time is running out for his side to string a real run of form together, and their run-in does not look favourable on paper.
One of their best chances of a crucial three points comes immediately after the international break, with a trip to Hull City, who are the worst home team in the league with just four wins from 19 games in East Yorkshire so far, next up on Saturday afternoon.
The Hatters then host automatic promotion-chasers Leeds United, while their final three matches on home turf are all against play-off hopeful sides in Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City and Coventry City.
Their best chances of potential wins come in the form of trips to Stoke City and Derby County, who are each also fighting for survival, before they then visit The Hawthorns to take on top-six side West Brom on the final day of the season.
It is fair to say that Luton's eight-game run-in does not make pretty viewing for supporters or Bloomfield alike. He will have to take every game as it comes though, and will no doubt already have an idea of which players he wants to keep and let go regardless of which league they are preparing to play in next year.
