Igor Matanović thanks Freiburg fans for support: "We really wanted to give them something back" | OneFootball

SC Freiburg’s travelling supporters did all they could to inspire the team in Wednesday’s Europa League final against Aston Villa, but the Bundesliga side ultimately fell to a clear 0-3 defeat.

Speaking to UEFA after the match, Freiburg forward Igor Matanović paid tribute to the club's loyal fans and said he was disappointed the team could not reward them with a first major trophy.

“They really push us a lot, support us every single day. When you go to the city, you see what this club means to these supporters, to the people in the city,” said Matanovic. 

"We are really proud to have supporters like this, and we really wanted to give them something back. I think we gave them a really good season, but yeah, we wanted to give them more."

Reflecting on the match itself, Igor Matanović felt Freiburg competed well until Aston Villa doubled their lead towards the end of the first half.

“We played a really good tournament. But today, we have to be honest, we played a good match, maybe until the second goal. Then we lost easy balls, and we were not 100% focused,” he said.
