Iker Muniain will become San Lorenzo head coach after agreeing to take over following Gustavo Álvarez’s exit. The former Spanish footballer will travel to Buenos Aires midweek to finalise details and start his tenure.

According to SuperDepor.com, a positive meeting set negotiations on track and the board chose Muniain ahead of Néstor “Pipo” Gorosito, Ramón Díaz and Rubén Darío Insua. He knows the club, enjoys strong backing and has ties with senior players.

Salary terms are settled, but the contract length is still to be defined. He must also formalise his release from a club in Spain, as a clause lets him end that deal if San Lorenzo or Athletic Club de Bilbao make a concrete offer.

That clause proved decisive, though paperwork remains before a signature. Muniain moved into coaching in Spain after retiring in 2025, immediately after his stint at San Lorenzo.

Early on, his teams have prioritised intensity, high pressing and possession, reflecting influences from coaches who shaped him, including Marcelo Bielsa.

He intends to arrive with a largely European staff, while San Lorenzo want to add an Argentine assistant with local knowledge. The club has outlined a challenging economic outlook on signings and exits, but Muniain has accepted the task.
