Ilzer confirms Hoffenheim defender has had ankle surgery

Christian Ilzer has confirmed that Valentin Gendrey has undergone ankle surgery and will miss TSG Hoffenheim’s match at VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday. According to BuLi News, MRI scans have revealed the extent of the damage.

The French defender sustained the injury during Wednesday’s training session.

“Valentin’s injury is a bitter blow. He has now undergone surgery. Suffering his third serious injury within a year is incredibly frustrating,” Ilzer said at his press conference.

“We hope he returns very quickly and can finally break this cycle of bad luck,” he added.

Ilzer said only Koki Machida and Adam Hložek are also unavailable for the trip, and both remain a long way from resuming team training.

Looking ahead to Wolfsburg, he wants his side to show identity and intensity against opponents in a relegation fight.
