Fernandez returned to the starting line-up having served a two game ban for comments he made about his future during the March international break.

The World Cup winner couldn’t stop Chelsea from slipping to a fourth consecutive league defeat without scoring, and the Blues are in big trouble.

Fernandez had a good chance in the first half which he arguably should have scored, but the Blues have now won just one of their last seven games, and that win was against Port Vale.

The 25-year-old partnered Moises Caicedo in midfield, with Cole Palmer taking up the number ten position, but despite creating some good chances Chelsea simply couldn’t score.

Fernandez had to come off in the second half, and Rosenior provided an injury update on the Argentine after the game.

“I just saw him in the dressing room,” he told his post-match press conference.

“I think it was his calf. I’m hoping it’s cramp. He’s getting work on it right now because we want him obviously fit for Tuesday.

“I think the fact that he ran himself into the ground for the club tonight and I expect nothing different from a man of his stature and his quality.”

Rosenior confirmed after the game Estevao had been in tears, and it feels unlikely the teenager will play any part in the remainder of the season.
