Manchester United are planning to sanction the exits of numerous players deemed surplus to requirements this summer.
Among those almost certain to leave is Victor Lindelof, who, along with Christian Eriksen, is now considering his options ahead of his contract expiring. Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton will also become free agents at the end of June, although the senior duo are expected to hang up their boots – and gloves – altogether.
Yet, the Nordic duo are ready to embark on new ventures elsewhere, having not been offered fresh terms by United.
Lindelof will be 31 by the time 2025/2026 gets underway and hasn’t been short of potential suitors in the months leading up to his release. Recently, he’s been tipped to complete a return to his former club, Benfica, whom he represented at both youth and senior level.
Remarkably, Lindelof even played alongside current head coach Ruben Amorim for a brief period in Portugal.

Returning to Lisbon eight years on from his £31 million Old Trafford move would provide the Sweden captain, whom counterpart Harry Maguire previously hailed as ‘technically brilliant’, with the chance to continue playing a top league, as well as being involved in a European competition each season. This year, Benfica reached the Champions League Round of 16 before being knocked out by Barcelona.
Currently second-placed in Liga Portugal, the club are well in the mix to book their spot in the Champions League again next term via qualifiers. However, they are only three points behind leaders Sporting Lisbon atop the table, with a first-place finish allowing them to progress straight to the group stage.
Lindelof will presumably be keeping tabs on how the Eagles fare, knowing he could well be playing a key role once the campaign kicks off.
As is so frequently the case during the international break, the player was put on the spot regarding his future during an interview with reporters.
“I don’t just have myself to think about anymore. It’s a decision we have to make as a family,” he told Swedish outlet Sportsbladet.
“Of course, I always try to think about football and what’s best for me. But it also goes hand in hand. What I think will be good is usually good for the family. I’m making the decision with my wife, too. Right now, we’re keeping our thoughts within the family.
“I feel that I still have a high level in me. The idea is that I want to play at the highest level.”
