Former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa dismissed scrutiny of his official World Cup portrait after Uruguay’s 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in Miami, yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk reports.
At the Hard Rock Stadium, Uruguay dominated but fell behind to Abdulelah Al-Amri in the first half before Maximiliano Araujo levelled on 80 minutes.
Before kick-off, a video of Bielsa’s pre-match photo, in which he stood motionless and looked down, went viral online amid suggestions it was a protest.
After the match, he said he owed no explanation for how the picture was taken, stressed he was not a model, and questioned why he should justify where he looked, adding that he did nothing wrong.
The two-time World Cup winners had endured a chaotic build-up, with their arrival from Cancun to Miami delayed by an airline permitting error in Mexico. The airline apologised and organisers worked with airport and operational partners to speed up the process and minimise disruption.
