Yoane Wissa insists that his best is yet to come, despite scoring Newcastle’s opening goal against PSV in the Champions League.

Eddie Howe’s side moved into the top eight of the Champions League after a resounding 3-0 win over PSV at home. Wissa scored the first and won the ball back off the opposition’s goalkeeper to create Anthony Gordon’s second. Harvey Barnes added a third in the second half to ensure they earned the three points.

Wissa missed the first five months of the season with a knee injury he suffered on international duty with the Democratic Republic of Congo. He made his first Newcastle start, after joining the club in the summer, at the end of December against Burnley in the Premier League, and now he has his first Champions League goal. Despite being on the scoresheet, he says his best is yet to come.

“There’s more to come, for sure,” he said. “Because I’m not 100% yet, but I’m close to it.

“I’m working hard to help the team. So, yes, tonight is really important because I showed the manager that I can play. I’m in a good place, but not the best place.”

The win against PSV was only Wissa’s second ever match in the Champions League and he was asked if nights like that are the reason he joined the club.

“Yes, for sure,” he answered. “For nights like this, for where I wanted to be, the club I wanted to join. So, yes, amazing, amazing night.

“It’s been a fantastic night because we played well. The fans have been amazing. For me, as you said, the first goal I hope of many, and hopefully another one next week.”

With that win Newcastle have confirmed their spot in the play-off places of the Champions League and could even finish in the top eight if they beat Paris St. Germain in France next week.

“For sure, we want to finish top eight,” he said. “I think we need to show some character because it’s going to be difficult there. They are the best team in Europe. So hopefully we can do it and finish in the top eight.”
