"I'm Proud to Be Here": Luca Zidane's Emotional First Words After Receiving a Hero's Welcome in Algeria
In landmark move that rekindles the Zinedine Zidane legacy, goalkeeper Luka Zidane officially joined the Algerian national team training camp on Monday.
The FIFA approved his nationality switch from France to Algeria prompting head coach Vladimir Petkovic to immediately include him for the final 2 decisive 2026 World cup qualifiers.
The 27 year old Granada shot stopper received hero’s welcome upon arrival at Algiers' Houari Boumediene Airport where fans gathered to celebrate the historic moment. Shortly after, he met his new teammates in camp.
In his first statement to the Algerian FA media, Luka expressed deep pride in representing his roots:
“I’m very happy to be here in Algeria and proud of my first call up. We’ll give everything to win the next match and make our people proud”
The decision inevitably brings back memories of his father Zinedine Zidane’s legendary World cup story .. but this time, the Zidane name will shine in green.
Luka’s arrival comes as Algeria lead their World cup qualifying group and prepare for decisive clash against Somalia on 9 October.
