After several blunders by Manuel Neuer, FC Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has recently been the subject of criticism, which Uli Hoeneß finds incomprehensible
Uli Hoeneß has defended Manuel Neuer and clearly criticized the public discussion surrounding the Bayern captain. After several mistakes by the 39-year-old, there has recently been speculation about his form and his future – which Hoeneß believes is completely exaggerated
„I think it’s impossible how everyone’s now falling over him. Manuel is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world – and that will remain the case,“ said the honorary president at the „Sport Marke Medien“ congress in Munich on Monday
The keeper’s contract expires in the summer of 2026. While Neuer himself recently emphasized that he „already has to think about what happens next“, Hoeneß sees no reason to rush. „I don’t think this topic will be discussed until the spring,“ he explained
Neuer turns 40 at the end of March. Hoeneß left open the question of whether the goalkeeper could make a comeback in a DFB shirt at the 2026 World Cup: „He and the national coach will have to work that out together.“ Neuer himself had announced his retirement from the national team after the 2024 European Championship at home and emphasized that his focus was fully on FC Bayern
In addition to Neuer, Hoeneß also commented on the future of Dayot Upamecano, whose contract expires at the end of the season. The honorary president believes an agreement can be reached: „I think he will extend his contract.“ The 27-year-old is playing an outstanding season under Vincent Kompany and is considered indispensable. Hoeneß praised the Frenchman’s development: Under Kompany, Upamecano has developed „into a player personality“

Despite interest from several top clubs, Hoeneß believes the record champions have the advantage. A decision soon would provide clarity – both for Bayern and for the squad planning for the coming season.
