FC Bayern defeated VfB Stuttgart 5-1 on Friday and immediately took the top spot in the Bundesliga standings. This has experts raving early on.
Bayern’s early-season form is already very strong—there’s no doubt about that. The record champions faced challenges during preseason because some players were injured or struggling with injuries, and many didn’t join the team until late after taking extended vacations following the World Cup.
Despite fewer training sessions, everything went very well. For Lothar Matthäus, however, that wasn’t all that surprising.
In his column for Sky, the all-time leading German international stated: “The way Bayern has hit the ground running again, and the number of chances they’ve had, is impressive. They could have won by an even wider margin. The Munich team is already back in the form that everyone expected and predicted.”

A lot of things were already working very well for the record champions. The two new signings, Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari, played at a high level—even though Brown was playing in a position he hadn’t trained for.
But for Matthäus, a number of factors came together on Friday. The VfB also made too many mistakes: “The Stuttgart players also did a lot wrong. I’m not just referring to the slip-up that led to the own goal. You can always defend set pieces. For the second goal, you have to commit a tactical foul on Kimmich to prevent him from even getting that close to the penalty area in the first place. That’s his strength—marching through the midfield with the ball. He was given an escort there.”
Still, a team has to capitalize on the opponent’s mistakes in the first place. And that’s exactly what Bayern did—and they do it very often. That’s why FCB is so strong and once again seems poised to dominate the Bundesliga.
