Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been out since the start of October with a hamstring injury, but could only be a few weeks away from a return.
Manager Pep Guardiola has sorely missed the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner, and City do not look anywhere near as good, or solid, without him.
The Spain international also missed the majority of last season after suffering a serious ACL injury in a September clash against Arsenal.
On his return, Guardiola said: “No [he is not available] but he is getting better. I do not know how long but he is at the stage where, in a few weeks, he will be ready.”
City play Real Madrid on 10 December, and asked if Rodri could be back for that game, the Spaniard said: “Ask me in Madrid.”
City face Sunderland at home this weekend. The Black Cats have shocked everyone with their performances and are currently sixth in the league, just five points behind the Manchester club.
Speaking about their brilliant season, Guardiola said: “From my humble opinion, they deserve to be where they are. Momentum can happen after a few games but after 14 fixtures in the Premier League with these opponents? To be in that position, they deserve it.
“They have four or five or six things they constantly do well, otherwise they would not be where they are. In this league, it is impossible. It is a good challenge for us.”
City have been involved in some thrilling games recently, beating Leeds 3-2 last weekend and winning 5-4 against Fulham in midweek.
They were 5-1 up against the Cottagers before Marco Silva’s side mounted an almost incredible comeback.
Asked if the match was the best of the season, Guardiola said: “Absolutely. It [the Fulham game] has to be one of the games of the year, of the season. We are candidates. Fulham and ourselves are candidates to win that. Definitely.
“If I was at home watching that game, I would not change the channel. The broadcasters must be happy with us.”
