The story of FC Barcelona this season has been intertwined with injuries. Every time they seem to recover one player, someone else suffers a setback and faces a spell on the sidelines, making life very difficult for Hansi Flick.
Against Chelsea on Tuesday, the German manager did not have Pedri, and it showed how much the team missed the Spaniard on the night. The midfielder is getting closer to returning and could be back in action as soon as this weekend.
Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, another Barcelona midfielder, Fermin Lopez, has suffered an injury and will be out for the next couple of weeks. The report describes it as a minor problem in the right calf muscle for the 22-year-old attacking midfielder.
Interestingly, this was not an injury that happened at Stamford Bridge. Instead, Fermin is dealing with the after-effects of Oihan Sancet’s horrendous tackle last weekend, which saw the Athletic Bilbao player shown a straight red card.
Fermin played against Chelsea to try to help the team. Unfortunately, he was not able to exert the kind of influence we have come to expect from him this season and was eventually taken off in the second half.
It remains to be seen which games the Spaniard will miss through this latest issue. This is a crisis Barcelona want to escape as soon as possible, but things are not straightforward. Let us hope this is one of the last injuries in the squad for the foreseeable future.
