Three Lions let loose after high-pressure evening at the Azteca
England were serenaded by their faithful travelling fans with a full-throated rendition of Oasis’ ‘Wonderwall’ after their breathless 3-2 defeat of Mexico in the World Cup last-16.
The odds seemed to be stacked against the Three Lions as they headed to Mexico City, where much was made of the thin atmosphere and hostile reception which awaited them at the Estadio Azteca, site of Diego Maradona’s infamous Hand of God.
A tense, hard-fought match produced a win which will go down in history, and the celebrations were suitably emotional.
But they rose to the occasion with aplomb. After a nervous, cagey opening half-hour, Jude Bellingham struck a quickfire brace to set Mexico reeling.
The first half had more action to give, though, as Julian Quinones pulled one back before the break, and more seemed to fall in favour of El Tri as Jarell Quansah was sent for an early shower in the second half for a reckless studs-up tackle on Jesus Gallardo.

There were plenty more twists in the tale to come. Anthony Gordon won a penalty which Harry Kane converted, but England’s captain turned from hero to villain as he then conceded a penalty, which Raul Jimenez duly buried.
That strike set up a frantic finish, but England dug in to see it out and celebrated with a goosebump-inducing performance of Wonderwall, sung in unison with their supporters.

It was a cathartic moment after a frantic match, made all the more poignant after Mexican supporters had roundly booed a selection of Oasis tracks played ahead of kick-off.
Even Reece James, who missed this match with a hamstring injury, got in the mix. There was concern, too, as Jordan Henderson appeared to sustain a serious injury after tripping amid the chaos.
Kane was at the centre of the celebrations and got so involved that he lost his voice.
He wheezed through a post-match interview with BBC Sport: “It was a crazy game. We had to fight and we had to find something.
“I've just been singing, I can't really talk. The occasion, the team, everything against us, we found a way.
“Incredible, unbelievable support. [I'm] speechless.”
