Iñaki Williams has publicly accepted his share of responsibility for Athletic’s disappointing campaign, posting on X as the club prepare to end their San Mamés programme against Celta tomorrow. Safety was assured after Real Sociedad drew with Girona in the previous round.

The latest setback, against Espanyol, was their 18th defeat in 36 matches, equalling the worst tally in the club’s history, matched on three other occasions. The squad are now trying to give Valverde and Lekue a farewell befitting their stature.

In his message, the captain said the season had not been easy for him or the team and acknowledged mistakes and collective responsibility. He added that the group have suffered, learned from difficult moments and that he is convinced it will make them stronger. He also recognised supporters’ frustration and noted that Athletic demand the maximum and fans are free to voice their views when results dip.

Many in the squad have fallen below their level and the message aimed to close ranks after a year marked by disenchantment between team and stands. Nico Williams, Sancet and Vivian are currently sidelined.

He stressed the season is not over, with two matches remaining and a chance to fight for Europe. Williams thanked supporters, including in Basque, for pushing through the hardest spells and promised they would return stronger. San Mamés will offer its verdict tomorrow.
