New signing Cameron Puertas speaks to WERDER.DE

There was still one transfer door left open for SV Werder, and through it stepped midfielder Cameron Puertas as a last-minute arrival this summer. In an exclusive interview with WERDER.DE, the 27-year-old explains why the decision to join was an easy one and which reunion he’s most looking forward to.

WERDER.DE: Moin, Cameron! It’s great to have you here. Since when did you know there was a chance to join Werder and why did you choose to make the move?

Cameron Puertas: My agent told me Werder were interested, and from that moment I was very sure I wanted to come to Bremen because Werder is a big club. On top of that, I already had a friend here in Senne Lynen. We’d been in touch, and he told me a lot about the club, the city and the team.

WERDER.DE: You shared Isaac Schmidt’s move to Werder in your Instagram story. You were both born in Lausanne – how well do you know each other?

Cameron Puertas: Yes, we know each other really well! I’ve known him for more than 15 years. I also spoke to him before the transfer, and for me it’s incredible that we’re now playing together at Werder. I’m really happy about it.

WERDER.DE: And it’s not just Isaac – you’re also reunited with Senne Lynen and Victor Boniface from your time at Union Saint-Gilloise. How special is that?

Cameron Puertas: It’s crazy, really. In football you never know what’s going to happen. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be playing with Isaac, Senne and Boni again, I wouldn’t have believed it.

WERDER.DE: In 2023/24 you were named Player of the Season in the Jupiler Pro League. What does that award mean to you?

Cameron Puertas: Of course, it’s a huge honour. It’s not easy to be recognised like that as a player. It probably only happens once in your career, so it means a lot to me.

WERDER.DE: After your time in Belgium, you spent a year in Saudi Arabia, even playing against Cristiano Ronaldo. What was that experience like?

Cameron Puertas: It was an incredible year for me. Things are very different there compared to Belgium or Switzerland. I enjoyed it a lot – it was a great experience, especially playing against players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Karim Benzema. But I wanted the next step in my career to be a move back to Europe.

WERDER.DE: Why was Werder the right next step?

Cameron Puertas: Because it gives me the chance to play in the Bundesliga, in front of big crowds. A lot of people follow these games, and I’m excited to wear the Werder shirt.

WERDER.DE: Your stats suggest you’re a goal threat from midfield. How would you describe yourself as a player?

Cameron Puertas: I like to have the ball. I want to play football, take players on, make my teammates better and give everything on the pitch for the club.

WERDER.DE: And what are your goals here at Werder?

Cameron Puertas: I want to help the team with assists, score goals myself and just make us better overall.
