Independiente engineered a comeback win at Libertadores de América Stadium on Saturday after Unión de Santa Fe took an early lead.
Bruno Pittón fired the Tatengues ahead before an own goal leveled the match before half-time. Fernando Gaibor scored from the penalty spot to win the matchday 18 Superliga Argentina contest for El Rojo.
Damián Martínez crossed in from the the right channel towards Franco Fragapane, but the attacker had a clumsy touch which allowed Fabricio Bustos the chance to clear.
Unfortunately for the home side, the clearance smacked off the side of Bruno Pittón’s face to beat goalkeeper Martín Campaña.
25-year-old midfielder Pittón rather inadvertently gave the visitors the lead in the 18th minute.
Perhaps trying to amends for his part in the opening goal, right-back Bustos surged forward towards the end of the first half. He played a low ball across the goal-mouth and Unión centre back Yeimar Gómez Andrade put the ball in his own net.
The Colombian defender tried to clear the cross out of danger but equalised for Independiente in the 42nd minute instead.
Veteran goalkeeper Nereo Fernández came off his line and fouled Pedro Pablo Hernández to set up a tense moment in the middle of the second half.
Fernando Gaibor stepped up and coolly sent the 39-year-old diving the wrong way. Independiente’s attacking midfielder scored the match-winner from the penalty spot in the 75th minute.
The come-from-behind win at home moves Independiente up to 28 points after matchday 18.
Despite being in control for stretches of the match, Unión walked away empty-handed and remain on 24 points, good enough for ninth place in the Superliga Argentina table.
