Independiente beat Newell’s in Avellaneda, perfect in Clausura

Independiente defeated Newell’s 1-0 at the Libertadores de América-Ricardo Enrique Bochini stadium on matchday two of the 2026 Torneo Clausura, maintaining a perfect record at the start of the competition. The only goal of the night was scored by Santiago Montiel in the 41st minute of the first half, giving El Rojo its second consecutive win.

Gustavo Quinteros’ team was coming off a 2-0 victory over Estudiantes in La Plata and picked up another three points to strengthen its position. Meanwhile, La Lepra, which had opened its campaign with a 1-0 win over Talleres, could not keep the momentum going and suffered its first defeat of the tournament.
