FC Bayern failed to get beyond a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Mainz 05 on the 14th Bundesliga matchday. The Bayern stars in the FCBinside individual critique.
Manuel Neuer: Wasn’t challenged at first, then couldn’t do anything when Mainz equalised 1-1 from close range. Neuer was also powerless when Mainz scored their second goal. Otherwise, the Bayern goalkeeper had no opportunities to distinguish himself. Grade: 3
Josip Stanisic: Lined up at right-back. Initially strong in defensive duels and also had plenty of contact with the ball going forward. But then Stanisic made a positioning error when he lost sight of Mainz goalscorer Lee at 2-1. Overall grade: 4
Minjae Kim: Lost the header duel when Mainz equalized at 1:1, was otherwise solid until his substitution, but only a grade 4 because of the goal he conceded
Hiroki Ito: Returned to the starting eleven for the first time since his long injury lay-off and started at centre-back. Played a solid game without making any mistakes. Mark: 3
Tom Bischof: Made an effort as a left-back, also in forward play, but was at fault for the free-kick shortly before half-time, which led to the 1-1 equaliser for the visitors. Kompany took him off after an hour. Overall grade for Bischof: 3
Joshua Kimmich: A lot went through the Bayern striker, but this time he was unable to initiate the decisive moves. Nevertheless, a very hard-working and committed performance from Kimmich. Grade: 3
Leon Goretzka: Once again delivered a lacklustre performance in the center of midfield. Played only safe passes and took no risks. Was substituted after an hour. Mark: 4
Michael Olise: Served Harry Kane with a fine cross, but the header was saved by Mainz keeper Batz. Shortly afterwards, he flicked the ball just wide of the goal. Olise set up the 1-0 goal after he had tunneled a Mainz player. Olise was very tricky in the first half and often posed a danger. However, he deteriorated quite a bit in the second half. Mark: 3
Lennart Karl: Put Bayern ahead with his goal after an assist from Gnabry. He was very committed and was a force in Bayern’s attacking midfield. It’s hard to imagine this Bayern team without Karl. Grade: 2

Serge Gnabry: Failed to beat goalkeeper Batz with a shot in the first half. Gnabry set up Karl’s goal with a good overview to make it 1-0. At the start of the second half, Gnabry fired a shot just over the goal. Then Gnabry didn’t hit the ball properly after a cross from Karl and missed the target. Gnabry then got stuck again by Batz. Gnabry tried very hard, but missed too many chances. Grade: 3
Harry Kane: Had a header from close range in the first half, but placed it too centrally for Batz in the Mainz goal to hold. Kane played his part in the 1-0, even if his attempted finish went wide of the goal – but Gnabry was still able to reach the ball and then pass it to Karl. Kane was then unlucky when his spectacular side-footed shot was blocked in the penalty area. The Englishman was also unable to put the ball in the net in the second half after Gnabry had failed to beat Batz – the keeper was already beaten, but two Mainz players were able to block Kane’s shot. Batz caught another Kane header from a dangerous position. But then the knot burst after many missed chances: After a foul on himself, Kane safely converted the penalty that was due. Grade: 3

Substitute
Alphonso Davies (61st for Ito): The Canadian showed great commitment in his second appearance after rupturing his cruciate ligament. However, it was noticeable that he was still holding back a little in tackles – which is normal. Grade: 3
Konrad Laimer (61st for Bischof): Couldn’t provide a breath of fresh air. Saw a yellow card for a foul, but otherwise didn’t stand out any further. Grade: 4
Aleksandar Pavlovic (61st for Goretzka): Brought more impetus than Goretzka after his substitution. After his pass to Kane, the goalscorer was fouled in the penalty area and converted the spot-kick. Mark: 3
Nicolas Jackson (73rd for Kim): Missed a great chance to equalize shortly after coming on as a substitute. Couldn’t create any more danger after that. 4
