A moment of significance for Indonesian women’s football

Indonesia have now been added to an illustrious list of teams that have won the AFF Women’s Cup. They join Japan, Australia, Philippines, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam as champions. It’s a significant milestone for Indonesia and their coach Satoru Mochizuki but they’ll need investment to build towards further successes.

Indonesia will now have months to prepare for the ASEON Women’s Football Championship. Garuda Pertiwi will compete against the likes of four-time winners Thailand and current champions Philippines.

Experienced head coach Mochizuki will need to draw on his previous successes. The former Urawa Reds star and Japan women’s assistant manager has had no shortage of significant moments. Most notably, Mochizuki played a significant part in Japan’s 2011 World Cup campaign, when Nadeshiko lifted the most prestigious trophy in world football for the first time.

Mochizuki clearly has his sights set on future success with Indonesia as they build towards the future. He said: “I believe that our journey to the final shows the strength of this team. Our target is to ascend to the top in Asia, and ultimately, to qualify for the World Cup.”
